Avistamiento del Quetzal!! Cobán (English Version, scroll down)

Guate Passport tuvo la oportunidad de ir a Ranchitos del Quetzal, Baja Verapaz, Purulhá.

Fuimos con el fin de conocer a nuestra ave nacional, el quetzal. No conocíamos el lugar previamente pero el personal es muy amable y nos indicaron que existe la posibilidad de quedarse ahí. Cuentan con 4 habitaciones, el precio de las habitaciones es de Q250 por noche. Además cuentan con servicio de restaurante para poder llegar a desayunar, almorzar o cenar.

Ranchitos del Quetzal está ubicado al lado del Biotopo del Quetzal, lo que lo hace fácil de ubicar. Lo especial de este lugar es que ellos cuentan con el árbol al que le gusta llegar el quetzal, ya sea porque llega a reposar o alimentarse. Por lo que ellos te indican que puedes visitar e lugar a las 6 de la mañana y puedas estar listo con tu cámara en el área de observatorio de aves. Lo principal es la paciencia, debes esperar, no hay ninguna fórmula mágica para aparecer al quetzal pero te aseguramos que la espera vale la pena.

De repente estábamos ahí, esperando y tuvimos la suerte que casi inmediatamente vimos aparecer la hembra del quetzal. Nos señalaron donde estaba y la pudimos ver, notamos que su pecho es de color marrón y no rojo como el macho. A los pocos minutos apareció un machó y también se posó en las ramas de estos árboles, y nos estuvo prácticamente modelando porque pudimos tomarle fotos de diferentes ángulos.

Un momento muy especial para los que estábamos reunidos ahí, especialmente cuando el quetzal levantó el vuelo y pudimos observar sus plumas largas caer sobre su cola, fue hermoso aletear y dirigirse hacia otro árbol.  Fue un momento inolvidable, muy emocionante, y pudimos realmente darnos cuenta de lo bella que es nuestra ave nacional y lo precioso de tener el privilegio de observarla, contemplarla. Al mismo tiempo queremos apoyara la preservación de bosques nubosos, que es su hábitat natural.

Con el grupo que estuvo ahí, pudimos compartir y comentar unos con otros a pesar de que no nos conocíamos. Fue tanta la emoción que realmente se volvió una camaradería muy bonita, y decidimos desayunar juntos y escribir en una pared de Ranchitos del Quetzal, donde te permiten escribir con marcador “Yo lo vi” para decir que viste el quetzal.

Te invitamos a que los visites, no siempre será posible que lo veas. Sin embargo siempre hay una alta probabilidad ya que en este lugar los quetzales están muy habituados y tienen un circuito de vuelo según nos explicaban las persona que laboran ahí, esa es la razón por la que los pájaros se posan en ese árbol que está situado en Ranchitos del Quetzal.

We went there to see our national bird, the quetzal. Previously we did not know the place but the staff is very friendly and told us that there is a possibility of staying there. They have 4 rooms; the price of the rooms is Q250 per night. They also have restaurant service for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Ranchitos Del Quetzal is located next to the Biotopo Del Quetzal, making it easy to locate. The special thing about this place is that they have a kind of tree that the quetzal like to be on, either comes to rest or eat. So they suggest that you can visit at 6 in the morning and be ready with your camera in the ​​bird observatory. The main thing is patience, you need to wait, there is no magic formula to appear a quetzal but we assure you that the wait is worth it.

Suddenly we were there waiting and we were fortunate that almost immediately saw a female quetzal appear. They pointed out where it was and we could see it, we noticed that her chest is brown and not red as the male. A few minutes later came a male and landed on the branches of these trees, and he was like modeling because we could take pictures from different angles.

A very special moment for those who were gathered there, especially when the quetzal flew away and we could see his long feathers on its tail fall; it was beautiful watching it flying toward another tree. It was an unforgettable, exciting time, and we really realize how beautiful is our national bird and lovely to have the privilege to observe it, contemplate. At the same time we support the preservation of cloud forests, which is their natural habitat.

With the group that was there, we were able to discuss and share with each other and even though we did not know each other. There was so much emotion that became a nice camaraderie and we decided to have breakfast together and write on a wall of Ranchitos del Quetzal, where they allow you to write with marker "Yo lo vi" to say you saw the quetzal.

We invite you to visit them; it is not always possible to see the quetzal. However there is always a high probability that it will be there, they are very accustomed and have a flight circuit, the person who work there explained, that's why the birds perch on the tree that is located in Ranchitos del Quetzal.

Volcán Acatenango

La aventura un día tomó lugar desde la aldea de La Soledad, el ascenso al volcán Acatenango. Una aventura que da muchas recompensas por el esfuerzo. Una espectacular vista al Volcán de Fuego con toda su elegancia, luciendo lo sublime de la belleza e imponencia de la naturaleza

.

La caminata comenzó desde la aldea, en unas enormes siembras de milpa. El camino al inicio tiene unas vistas muy buenas en los caminos de las siembras, hasta llegar al famoso Árbol Hueco.

Después de las siembras sigue un bonito y fresco bosque nuboso con una vegetación densa, donde por primera vez tuve la oportunidad de apreciar la flor llamada “Mano de Diablo”, una curiosa flor roja con forma de mano con dedos que a la vista se ven filosos.

Cuando llegamos al Conejo nos dimos la oportunidad de comer algo para volver a agarrar fuerzas.

Las Tres Marías fueron una parte que nos sacó el jugo, un camino que exige una gran fuerza de voluntad para seguir.

Después de subir las Tres Marías llegamos al camino para pasar por el Pico Yepocapa, una de las dos cumbres de este volcán. Desde este lugar ya podíamos ver la cumbre más alta del Acatenango, junto con ella también estaba el último tramo del sendero.

Esta fue la parte que nos impulsó a seguir el último tramo, pero el sendero se veía como una última prueba de nuestra voluntad por seguir. La última subida es conocida como “La Maldita” y el nombre en lo personal, si pienso que fue un nombre bien pensado.

Durante La Maldita, las fuerzas comenzaban a escasear, ver para arriba solo ayudaba a quitar parte de lo ánimos. Luego de solo seguir caminando, de repente ya estaba a punto de llegar a la cumbre. Comencé a caminar un poco más rápido por la emoción y al llegar, lo primero que hice fue quitarme la mochila y abrazar a mis compañeros.

Mientras almorzábamos, el Volcán de Fuego demostraba ser coqueto como siempre, nos enseñaba su poder.

Comenzamos a descender, y tomamos la ruta de Los Cazadores. La bajada fue un poco más relajante por sus caminos de arena donde podíamos deslizarnos.

The adventure took place one day in La Soledad, the walk to Acatenango. An adventure that gives many rewards for the effort. A spectacular view of the Volcán de Fuego with all its elegance, wearing the sublime beauty and grandeur of nature.

The walk started from the village, between huge cornfields. The initial part offers a nice view of these cornfield, until you reach “El Árbol Hueco”

After the cornfields follows a nice and cool cloud forest with dense vegetation, where I had the opportunity to appreciate the flower called "Hand of the Devil", a curious red flower shaped like a hand with fingers that at first sight, look sharp..

When we arrived at El Conejo, we gave us the opportunity to eat something to regain strength.

Las Tres Marias was a part that challenged us, a path that requires great willpower to keep walking.

After climbing Las Tres Marias we hit the road through the Pico Yepocapa, one of the two peaks of the volcano. From here we could already see the highest peak of Acatenango, along with it also was the last part of the trail.

This was the part that encouraged us to keep with it, but the trail was seen as a final test of our will to continue. The final part is known as "La Maldita" and personally I think this name was well earned..

During La Maldita, strength began to run low,watching up just helped remove part of the will. After walking for a while, I realized that the end of the trail was there. I started walking a little faster and upon arrival, the first thing I did was to take off my backpack and hug my teammates.

Over lunch, the Volcán de Fuego proved to be charming as always, he showed us his power

We began to descend, and take the “Ruta de los Cazadores”. The descent was a bit more relaxing for its sandy paths where we could slide.

Cuchumatanes, Huehuetenango

Mi primer viaje de montañismo fue cuando tenía 14 años y la actividad se dio en Los Cuchumatanes, Huehuetenango. Un viaje para no olvidar, la experiencia que me llevó a convertirme en un montañista.

Nos reunimos con el grupo K’ashem en el punto de encuentro, viernes en la noche. El bus salió y todos dormimos durante casi todo el camino. Llegamos a un parqueo ya en Huehuetenango y salimos a estirar las piernas después del largo viaje en bus y de repente una sensación de frío me abrazó para devolverme las ganas de regresar a dormir al bus. Era un frío que nunca en mi vida había sentido, me envolví en mis sábanas y dormimos hasta el amanecer.

Cuando despertamos estábamos frente a un comedor y como los montañistas somos de buen diente, no dudamos de darnos una buena comida antes de empezar el reto. Los clásicos pero siempre deliciosos huevitos y frijolitos acompañados de queso y tortillas, para comer con un café o chocolate caliente, una comida que nos dio la energía para emprender esta aventura.

Regresamos al bus después del desayuno para llegar al lugar de inicio para la caminata. El bus nos dejó al inicio de una calle que se desvía de la carretera. Alistamos las chivas y comenzamos a caminar.

Yo en mi poca experiencia miraba como el grupo se iba hasta adelante y pocos quedamos atrás. El clima, la altura, la vista, todo era tan nuevo para mí. El hecho de tener calor y sentarme en la sombra para que me diera frío me confundía. Las piedras y los árboles tenían formas tan extrañas e interesantes.

El cansancio y la actitud negativa me lograron dominar por un momento y quise tirar la toalla. El guía que cerraba el grupo nunca dejó de animarme y ayudarme a seguir avanzando. De pronto ya estaba la cumbre a la vista, pero el precio era una subida retadora.  A media subida hay una pequeña mina de cuarzo, una piedra preciosa.

Llegando a la cumbre estaba la vista más espectacular que había visto en toda mi vida, era algo impresionante. Una buena recompensa que hacía valer la pena todo el esfuerzo que había hecho. Almorzamos, descansamos un momento y comenzamos a caminar hacia el campamento.

Después de cruzar un valle llegamos al campamento al lado de la Laguna de Ordoñez, bastante cómodo. Armamos las carpas y preparamos la cena para darnos después las merecidas horas de sueño.

En la madrugada al abrir las carpas vimos que una pequeña capa blanca había cubierto todo a nuestro alrededor. La escarcha había cubierto el suelo y las carpas, la laguna tenía trozos de hielo grandes en su orilla.

Don Jerónimo, un guía local de La Ventosa, nos acompañó hasta que llegamos al campamento. Ya al amanecer, Don Jerónimo ya había regresado con nosotros, cosa que nos impresionó porque vino caminando desde su casa.

Comenzamos a desayunar y a desmontar el campamento para estar preparados. Luego que el sol ya apareció en el pequeño valle, la escarcha desapareció. Era nuestra señal para comenzar a avanzar.

El camino de regreso era otro, un camino completamente plano en una gran parte que luego se conecta con el sendero para regresar al bus.

Ya la parte difícil había terminado y estaba satisfecho de mi primer logro como montañista, ansiando la llegada al bus para un merecido descanso.

Esta es una experiencia que personalmente siempre llevo en el corazón y que me ha enseñado que a veces la situación puede ser difícil pero si se puede llegar a la cumbre.

My first trip as a mountaineer was when I was 14 and the activity was in Los Cuchumatanes, Huehuetenango. A trip to remember, the experience that led me to become a mountaineer.

We met with the group K'ashem at the meeting point, Friday night. The bus came to pick us and we all slept for most of the way. We arrived at a parking lot in Huehuetenango and went out to stretch our legs after the long bus ride and suddenly a cold feeling embraced me and made me want to return to sleep in the bus. It was a cold that never in my life, I wrapped myself in my sheets and slept until dawn.

When we woke up we were next to a restaurant and as mountaineers we like to eat, we didn’t think twice in having a good meal before starting the challenge. The classic but always delicious eggs and beans accompanied by cheese and tortillas, with coffee or hot chocolate, a meal that gave us the energy to jump to this adventure.

We returned to the bus after breakfast to get to the starting point for the hike. The bus dropped us off at the beginning of a road. We prepared our equipment and started walking.

With no experience I walked as the group went faster and few stayed behind like me. The climate, the height, the view, everything was so new to me. A strong heat over myself and sitting in the shade just to feel a lot of cold, I was confused. The stones and trees were so strange and in interesting ways forms.

Tiredness and negative attitude managed to dominate my mind, for a while and wanted to give up. The guide who closed the group never stopped encouraging me and helping me to move forward. Suddenly the peak was already in sight, but the price was a challenging hike. Half of the way up is a small quartz mine, a gemstone.

Arriving at the peak, there was the most spectacular view I had ever seen in my life, it was really impressive. A perfect reward given for all my effort. We had lunch; we rested a moment and started walking toward the camp.

After crossing a valley we arrived at the camp near the Laguna de Ordoñez, quite comfortable. We set up the tents and prepare dinner before the deserved hours of sleep.

In the morning when we opened the tents we saw a thin white layer that covered everything around us. The frost had covered the ground and the tents, the lagoon had large pieces of ice on the shore.

Don Jeronimo, a local guide from La Ventosa, accompanied us until we reached the camp. And at dawn, Don Jeronimo was back with us, which impressed us because he came walking from home.

We started to prepare breakfast and decamp to be prepared. And when the sun appeared in the little valley, frost disappeared. It was our signal to start moving.

The way back was another path, a completely flat road in a large part which then connects with the trail to return to the bus.

Now the hard part was over and I was happy with my first achievement as a mountaineer, wanting to arrive at the bus for a break.

This is an experience I always carry in my heart and that has taught me that sometimes the situation may be difficult but you can always reach the peak.

Taller fotográfico con Iván Castro en Tikal

En el mes de julio, Guatepassport y Marvin Grijalva Photography,  tuvimos  la oportunidad de participar en el taller de fotografía que realizó Ivan Castro y Shutter Guatemala en Tikal, donde acudieron fotógrafos de todas las edades y niveles pero todos con el mismo sentido de compañerismo  y apoyo mutuo para captar hermosas imágenes del Parque Tikal.

Iván Castro, reconocido fotográfo a nivel nacional e internacional, Shutter Guatemala y el INGUAT están promoviendo a Guatemala como un destino fotográfico por las condiciones tan especiales Con las que aquí contamos como:  Paisajes, historia y cultura.

Iván Castro es un joven muy entusiasta de la fotografía en la que se ha logrado destacar , una fuente de inspiración para las personas  que asisten a sus talleres,  es un motivador nato para  animar a las personas a iniciarse en la carrera de aprender el arte de la fotografia,  dentro de sus frases hay una muy particular que llamo nuestra atención: “No es la flecha sino el indio”….me lo dijo cuando le pedimos una foto con el y me excuse por no tener una cámara profesional….y su mensaje ante mi inseguridad fue, que realmente no importa si tu solo tienes una cámara de celular o una cámara pequeña, esto no es una limitante para que inicies en esta carrera, lo que importa es la pasión y el deseo de aprender….muy cierto!! Una frase ideal para romper paradigmas.

En la convivencia con el grupo, pudimos comprobar  que todos son muy amplios en compartir sus conocimientos, en mostrar cómo funciona el equipo, dar tips y hacer todo lo posible para que cada uno pueda ir mejorando sus propias técnicas y cada vez lograr mejores fotos, es definitivamente un ambiente ideal para que nuevos talentos florezcan!

Este evento en particular tuvo como escenario  la oportunidad y el permiso único del  INGUAT de permitir que alrededor de 115 fotografos pudiéramos acampar dentro del parque de Tikal, de hecho, el campamento fue al  pie del Templo de Las Máscaras, por lo que sólo debíamos rodearlo y estábamos en la Plaza Mayor haciendo fotografía nocturna, fue realmente maravilloso contemplar las siluetas de estas grandes estructuras a la luz de la luna e imaginar que podíamos retroceder en el tiempo y ver a esta gran civilización en su auge…fue un privilegio que creo marco la vida de todos los que pasamos la noche dentro del parque, lo más espectacular que ha sucedido en la historia de la fotografía en Guatemala.

In July, Guatepassport and Marvin Grijalva Photography had the opportunity to participate in the photography workshop that Ivan Castro organized with Shutter Guatemala at Tikal, which was attended by photographers of all ages and levels but all with the same sense of fellowship and mutual support to capture beautiful images of Tikal.

Ivan Castro, known photographer at national and international level, INGUAT and Shutter Guatemala are promoting Guatemala as a photographic destination for the very special conditions that we have here as landscapes, history and culture.

Ivan Castro is a very enthusiastic young photographer that has managed to stand out, a source of inspiration for people who attend their workshops, is a born motivator willing to encourage people to start in the career to learn the art of photography, within his phrases there is a very particular one that caught our attention: "It's not the arrow but the Indian" ... I was told that when I asked for a photo with him and excused myself for not having a professional camera ... and his message for my insecurity was that does not really matter if you only have your cellphone camera or a small camera, it is not an obstacle for you start in this career, what matters is the passion and the desire to learn ... true words!! An ideal sentence to break paradigms.

While spending time with the group, we found that all are very open minded in sharing their knowledge, to show how the equipment works, give some tips and do everything possible so that everyone can go to improve their own techniques and increasingly achieving better photos. It is definitely an ideal place to discover new talent that will increase!!

This particular event took place because of the opportunity and the only permission that INGUAT allowed about 115 photographers to camp inside the park Tikal, in fact, the camp was next to Templo de las Mascaras, so we could just walk around. We were in the Plaza Mayor by night, it was really amazing to watch the silhouettes of these large structures in the light of the moon and imagine if we could go back in time and see this great civilization at its peak ... it was a privilege that marked the lives of all those who spent the night inside the park, the most spectacular event that has happened in the history of photography in Guatemala.

We hope our story can motivate more people to participate in such workshops with Ivan Castro and ShutterGuatemala.
