Avistamiento del Quetzal!! Cobán (English Version, scroll down)

Guate Passport tuvo la oportunidad de ir a Ranchitos del Quetzal, Baja Verapaz, Purulhá.

Fuimos con el fin de conocer a nuestra ave nacional, el quetzal. No conocíamos el lugar previamente pero el personal es muy amable y nos indicaron que existe la posibilidad de quedarse ahí. Cuentan con 4 habitaciones, el precio de las habitaciones es de Q250 por noche. Además cuentan con servicio de restaurante para poder llegar a desayunar, almorzar o cenar.

Ranchitos del Quetzal está ubicado al lado del Biotopo del Quetzal, lo que lo hace fácil de ubicar. Lo especial de este lugar es que ellos cuentan con el árbol al que le gusta llegar el quetzal, ya sea porque llega a reposar o alimentarse. Por lo que ellos te indican que puedes visitar e lugar a las 6 de la mañana y puedas estar listo con tu cámara en el área de observatorio de aves. Lo principal es la paciencia, debes esperar, no hay ninguna fórmula mágica para aparecer al quetzal pero te aseguramos que la espera vale la pena.

De repente estábamos ahí, esperando y tuvimos la suerte que casi inmediatamente vimos aparecer la hembra del quetzal. Nos señalaron donde estaba y la pudimos ver, notamos que su pecho es de color marrón y no rojo como el macho. A los pocos minutos apareció un machó y también se posó en las ramas de estos árboles, y nos estuvo prácticamente modelando porque pudimos tomarle fotos de diferentes ángulos.

Un momento muy especial para los que estábamos reunidos ahí, especialmente cuando el quetzal levantó el vuelo y pudimos observar sus plumas largas caer sobre su cola, fue hermoso aletear y dirigirse hacia otro árbol.  Fue un momento inolvidable, muy emocionante, y pudimos realmente darnos cuenta de lo bella que es nuestra ave nacional y lo precioso de tener el privilegio de observarla, contemplarla. Al mismo tiempo queremos apoyara la preservación de bosques nubosos, que es su hábitat natural.

Con el grupo que estuvo ahí, pudimos compartir y comentar unos con otros a pesar de que no nos conocíamos. Fue tanta la emoción que realmente se volvió una camaradería muy bonita, y decidimos desayunar juntos y escribir en una pared de Ranchitos del Quetzal, donde te permiten escribir con marcador “Yo lo vi” para decir que viste el quetzal.

Te invitamos a que los visites, no siempre será posible que lo veas. Sin embargo siempre hay una alta probabilidad ya que en este lugar los quetzales están muy habituados y tienen un circuito de vuelo según nos explicaban las persona que laboran ahí, esa es la razón por la que los pájaros se posan en ese árbol que está situado en Ranchitos del Quetzal.

We went there to see our national bird, the quetzal. Previously we did not know the place but the staff is very friendly and told us that there is a possibility of staying there. They have 4 rooms; the price of the rooms is Q250 per night. They also have restaurant service for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Ranchitos Del Quetzal is located next to the Biotopo Del Quetzal, making it easy to locate. The special thing about this place is that they have a kind of tree that the quetzal like to be on, either comes to rest or eat. So they suggest that you can visit at 6 in the morning and be ready with your camera in the ​​bird observatory. The main thing is patience, you need to wait, there is no magic formula to appear a quetzal but we assure you that the wait is worth it.

Suddenly we were there waiting and we were fortunate that almost immediately saw a female quetzal appear. They pointed out where it was and we could see it, we noticed that her chest is brown and not red as the male. A few minutes later came a male and landed on the branches of these trees, and he was like modeling because we could take pictures from different angles.

A very special moment for those who were gathered there, especially when the quetzal flew away and we could see his long feathers on its tail fall; it was beautiful watching it flying toward another tree. It was an unforgettable, exciting time, and we really realize how beautiful is our national bird and lovely to have the privilege to observe it, contemplate. At the same time we support the preservation of cloud forests, which is their natural habitat.

With the group that was there, we were able to discuss and share with each other and even though we did not know each other. There was so much emotion that became a nice camaraderie and we decided to have breakfast together and write on a wall of Ranchitos del Quetzal, where they allow you to write with marker "Yo lo vi" to say you saw the quetzal.

We invite you to visit them; it is not always possible to see the quetzal. However there is always a high probability that it will be there, they are very accustomed and have a flight circuit, the person who work there explained, that's why the birds perch on the tree that is located in Ranchitos del Quetzal.

Artista Tzutujiles en San Juan La Laguna, Sololá

El fin de semana pasado, fuimos a visitar San Juan La Laguna. Un lugar donde el arte nato de las personas se puede apreciar por doquier,  desde murales en las paredes de las viviendas hasta en las vestimentas, especialmente de las mujeres adornadas con hermosos cinchos en su cintura.

En este lugar, cuna de los Tz´utujiles,  crearon su propio estilo de arte, único de esta región, en sus tejidos  utilizan colores orgánicos y trabajan en cooperación entre ellos para obtener mejores beneficios para la comunidad. Su arte es 100% original.

Admirando los cuadros, iniciamos una conversación con Don Noé quien amablemente nos atendió y comento  que es el presidente de la Asociación de Pintores Primitivistas y nos presentó los 3 estilos de pintura que ellos trabajan:

•          La vista de pájaro que consiste en pintar una perspectiva desde arriba como ellos imaginan que nos verían los pájaros.
• 
  
•          La vista de hormiga donde todo lo pintan gigante, así como nos verían las hormigas.
• 
  
•          Y la vista mixta que es la combinación de ambas

Luego nos presentó con Ingrid quien es la representante de la Asociación La Voz de los Tzutujiles y ambos nos comentaron que han tenido dificultades  porque el crecimiento del lago dejó sus locales bajo el agua. Ellos se encuentran ahora en un pequeño local, buscan apoyo para promover sus pinturas al óleo con técnicas originales y que los turistas lleguen a visitarlos a sus locales, por lo que agradecen podamos difundir esta situación y asi buscar apoyo para incrementar sus ventas.

The past weekend, we visited San Juan La Laguna. A place where people is born with art and can be seen everywhere, from murals on the walls of houses to the garments, especially women adorned with beautiful straps around their waist.

In this place, the cradle of the Tz'utujil, they created their own style of art, unique in this region, in their tissues using organic colors and work in cooperation with each other to get better benefits for the community. Their art is 100% original.

Admiring the pictures, we started a conversation with Don Noé who kindly attended and commented that he is the president of the Association of Primitivist Painters and introduced us 3 painting styles they work:

   • The bird's view, that involves painting a perspective from above as they imagine that we would see as birds.

   • The view of ant, where everything is painted as giant size and see like ants.

   • And the mixed view is a combination of both.

Then he presented us to Ingrid who is the representative of the Association of the Tzutujil Voice and they told us they are having difficulties because of the lake’s growth, their stores were left underwater. They are now in a small place, seeking support to promote their oil paintings with original techniques for tourists to come visit their stores, so they are very thankful when your share this situation and also seek support to increase their sales.
