Parque Nacional Quiriguá!

Nos aventuramos a ir a conocer el Parque Nacional Quiriguá, Izabal con el propósito de ir a fotografiar sus famosas estelas, nos tomó alrededor de 4 horas llegar a este lugar. Está muy bien señalizado, tienes que desviarte alrededor de 15 minutos de la carretera principal hacia la entrada del parque.

Ahí dentro encuentras parqueo, ventas de artesanías y servicios como baños.

En sí el parque no es tan grande, pero dentro el hay mucha historia guardada. Dentro de ella está la Estela E, la más alta del mundo maya con 10.6 metros de alto.

Pudimos recorrerlo completamente, en la salida del parque pasamos a los puestos de artesanías. Tuvimos el gusto de platicar con Doña Dominga que nos contó que ella teje a mano los telares que puedes observar en la foto.

Ella nos cuenta que  cada uno de estos telares le toma 2 meses para producir cada uno de ellos y el valor es de Q700.00. Ella nos comentó como se trasladó de Antigua Guatemala hacia Quiriguá para poder tener acceso a nuevos cliente con sus telares.

El cruce hacia la entrada está ubicado en el km 204, tomando la Carretera al Atlántico hacia Puerto Barrios.

We ventured ourselves to the National Park Quiriguá, Izabal with the purpose of going to photograph its famous stelas, it took about 4 hours to reach this place. It is well signposted; you have to detour around 15 minutes from the main road to the park entrance.

In there you will find parking, craft sales and services such as bathrooms.

The park itself is not that big, but inside there is much saved history. For example the Stela E, the 

highest of the Mayan world with 10.6 meters tall.

We were able to explore the park completely; exiting the park we visited the craft sales. We had the pleasure to talk with Doña Dominga told us that she hand knits the looms that you see in the photo.

She told us that each of these looms takes two months to produce each one and the value is Q700.00.

She told us how she moved from Antigua Guatemala to Quirigua to gain access to new customers with her looms.

Artista Tzutujiles en San Juan La Laguna, Sololá

El fin de semana pasado, fuimos a visitar San Juan La Laguna. Un lugar donde el arte nato de las personas se puede apreciar por doquier,  desde murales en las paredes de las viviendas hasta en las vestimentas, especialmente de las mujeres adornadas con hermosos cinchos en su cintura.

En este lugar, cuna de los Tz´utujiles,  crearon su propio estilo de arte, único de esta región, en sus tejidos  utilizan colores orgánicos y trabajan en cooperación entre ellos para obtener mejores beneficios para la comunidad. Su arte es 100% original.

Admirando los cuadros, iniciamos una conversación con Don Noé quien amablemente nos atendió y comento  que es el presidente de la Asociación de Pintores Primitivistas y nos presentó los 3 estilos de pintura que ellos trabajan:

•          La vista de pájaro que consiste en pintar una perspectiva desde arriba como ellos imaginan que nos verían los pájaros.
• 
  
•          La vista de hormiga donde todo lo pintan gigante, así como nos verían las hormigas.
• 
  
•          Y la vista mixta que es la combinación de ambas

Luego nos presentó con Ingrid quien es la representante de la Asociación La Voz de los Tzutujiles y ambos nos comentaron que han tenido dificultades  porque el crecimiento del lago dejó sus locales bajo el agua. Ellos se encuentran ahora en un pequeño local, buscan apoyo para promover sus pinturas al óleo con técnicas originales y que los turistas lleguen a visitarlos a sus locales, por lo que agradecen podamos difundir esta situación y asi buscar apoyo para incrementar sus ventas.

The past weekend, we visited San Juan La Laguna. A place where people is born with art and can be seen everywhere, from murals on the walls of houses to the garments, especially women adorned with beautiful straps around their waist.

In this place, the cradle of the Tz'utujil, they created their own style of art, unique in this region, in their tissues using organic colors and work in cooperation with each other to get better benefits for the community. Their art is 100% original.

Admiring the pictures, we started a conversation with Don Noé who kindly attended and commented that he is the president of the Association of Primitivist Painters and introduced us 3 painting styles they work:

   • The bird's view, that involves painting a perspective from above as they imagine that we would see as birds.

   • The view of ant, where everything is painted as giant size and see like ants.

   • And the mixed view is a combination of both.

Then he presented us to Ingrid who is the representative of the Association of the Tzutujil Voice and they told us they are having difficulties because of the lake’s growth, their stores were left underwater. They are now in a small place, seeking support to promote their oil paintings with original techniques for tourists to come visit their stores, so they are very thankful when your share this situation and also seek support to increase their sales.

Taller fotográfico con Iván Castro en Tikal

En el mes de julio, Guatepassport y Marvin Grijalva Photography,  tuvimos  la oportunidad de participar en el taller de fotografía que realizó Ivan Castro y Shutter Guatemala en Tikal, donde acudieron fotógrafos de todas las edades y niveles pero todos con el mismo sentido de compañerismo  y apoyo mutuo para captar hermosas imágenes del Parque Tikal.

Iván Castro, reconocido fotográfo a nivel nacional e internacional, Shutter Guatemala y el INGUAT están promoviendo a Guatemala como un destino fotográfico por las condiciones tan especiales Con las que aquí contamos como:  Paisajes, historia y cultura.

Iván Castro es un joven muy entusiasta de la fotografía en la que se ha logrado destacar , una fuente de inspiración para las personas  que asisten a sus talleres,  es un motivador nato para  animar a las personas a iniciarse en la carrera de aprender el arte de la fotografia,  dentro de sus frases hay una muy particular que llamo nuestra atención: “No es la flecha sino el indio”….me lo dijo cuando le pedimos una foto con el y me excuse por no tener una cámara profesional….y su mensaje ante mi inseguridad fue, que realmente no importa si tu solo tienes una cámara de celular o una cámara pequeña, esto no es una limitante para que inicies en esta carrera, lo que importa es la pasión y el deseo de aprender….muy cierto!! Una frase ideal para romper paradigmas.

En la convivencia con el grupo, pudimos comprobar  que todos son muy amplios en compartir sus conocimientos, en mostrar cómo funciona el equipo, dar tips y hacer todo lo posible para que cada uno pueda ir mejorando sus propias técnicas y cada vez lograr mejores fotos, es definitivamente un ambiente ideal para que nuevos talentos florezcan!

Este evento en particular tuvo como escenario  la oportunidad y el permiso único del  INGUAT de permitir que alrededor de 115 fotografos pudiéramos acampar dentro del parque de Tikal, de hecho, el campamento fue al  pie del Templo de Las Máscaras, por lo que sólo debíamos rodearlo y estábamos en la Plaza Mayor haciendo fotografía nocturna, fue realmente maravilloso contemplar las siluetas de estas grandes estructuras a la luz de la luna e imaginar que podíamos retroceder en el tiempo y ver a esta gran civilización en su auge…fue un privilegio que creo marco la vida de todos los que pasamos la noche dentro del parque, lo más espectacular que ha sucedido en la historia de la fotografía en Guatemala.

Esperamos que nuestro relato pueda motivar a mas personas a participar en este tipo de talleres con Ivan Castro y Shutterguatemala .

In July, Guatepassport and Marvin Grijalva Photography had the opportunity to participate in the photography workshop that Ivan Castro organized with Shutter Guatemala at Tikal, which was attended by photographers of all ages and levels but all with the same sense of fellowship and mutual support to capture beautiful images of Tikal.

Ivan Castro, known photographer at national and international level, INGUAT and Shutter Guatemala are promoting Guatemala as a photographic destination for the very special conditions that we have here as landscapes, history and culture.

Ivan Castro is a very enthusiastic young photographer that has managed to stand out, a source of inspiration for people who attend their workshops, is a born motivator willing to encourage people to start in the career to learn the art of photography, within his phrases there is a very particular one that caught our attention: "It's not the arrow but the Indian" ... I was told that when I asked for a photo with him and excused myself for not having a professional camera ... and his message for my insecurity was that does not really matter if you only have your cellphone camera or a small camera, it is not an obstacle for you start in this career, what matters is the passion and the desire to learn ... true words!! An ideal sentence to break paradigms.

While spending time with the group, we found that all are very open minded in sharing their knowledge, to show how the equipment works, give some tips and do everything possible so that everyone can go to improve their own techniques and increasingly achieving better photos. It is definitely an ideal place to discover new talent that will increase!!

This particular event took place because of the opportunity and the only permission that INGUAT allowed about 115 photographers to camp inside the park Tikal, in fact, the camp was next to Templo de las Mascaras, so we could just walk around. We were in the Plaza Mayor by night, it was really amazing to watch the silhouettes of these large structures in the light of the moon and imagine if we could go back in time and see this great civilization at its peak ... it was a privilege that marked the lives of all those who spent the night inside the park, the most spectacular event that has happened in the history of photography in Guatemala.

We hope our story can motivate more people to participate in such workshops with Ivan Castro and ShutterGuatemala.
