The adventure took place one day in La Soledad, the walk to Acatenango. An adventure that gives many rewards for the effort. A spectacular view of the Volcán de Fuego with all its elegance, wearing the sublime beauty and grandeur of nature.

The walk started from the village, between huge cornfields. The initial part offers a nice view of these cornfield, until you reach “El Árbol Hueco”

After the cornfields follows a nice and cool cloud forest with dense vegetation, where I had the opportunity to appreciate the flower called "Hand of the Devil", a curious red flower shaped like a hand with fingers that at first sight, look sharp..

When we arrived at El Conejo, we gave us the opportunity to eat something to regain strength.

Las Tres Marias was a part that challenged us, a path that requires great willpower to keep walking.
After climbing Las Tres Marias we hit the road through the Pico Yepocapa, one of the two peaks of the volcano. From here we could already see the highest peak of Acatenango, along with it also was the last part of the trail.

This was the part that encouraged us to keep with it, but the trail was seen as a final test of our will to continue. The final part is known as "La Maldita" and personally I think this name was well earned..

During La Maldita, strength began to run low, watching up just helped remove part of the will. After walking for a while, I realized that the end of the trail was there. I started walking a little faster and upon arrival, the first thing I did was to take off my backpack and hug my teammates.

Over lunch, the Volcán de Fuego proved to be charming as always, he showed us his power

We began to descend, and take the “Ruta de los Cazadores”. The descent was a bit more relaxing for its sandy paths where we could slide.

One weekend we decided to participate in an activity at Laguna Chicabal. Organized by Christian Rodriguez and Pro Ciegos, the activity consisted in taking blind to hike the volcano and give them a new experience. At first it seemed an easy task where we only had to guide the participants on the road, but the concept of ascent changed for us when Christian gave us instructions for this new challenge.

Challenge instructions were:

  •        Groups of 3 (always 1 or 2)

  •          We were going in a straight line with every member of the group holding a same rod, so we could go as one... one in front is placed, the blind person in the middle and back can also be a blind if necessary.

  •          In some sections we exchanged positions and if you were in the back you could get blindfolded and experience what they were living.

The walk started from the entrance to the village of San Martin Chile Verde, a journey of about 2 hours. In some parts of the way I was blindfolded; quite a different experience from the common activities because you must learn to trust the people in the front. Not being able to use one sense is something that changes the situation completely when walking.

The road was really nice; in the mountain you can always make new friends and can talk about several interesting topics.
Something that drew my attention is that blind people said they could smell the green color. A lady also said she could feel the reflection of the moon on the lake, interesting to see how the other senses develop in great ways.

In the group was a man with his family, wife and son, who despite whatever obstacles, he was determined to climb the volcano. He carried his things and carried his son on the road without breaking, an admirable example of willpower.

Agregar leyenda
The experience was more than exciting and when we arrived at the camp we set up our tents. One of the most comfortable camps I’ve ever tried, because of the soft sand.

In the evening was a place of peace and tranquility where the stars and the moon where shining with splendor, giving a show to never forget.

The morning offered a different but equally amazing show. Wind currents inside the crater were accompanied by a thick white mist. For some moments at the center of the lagoon there was a swirl of mist, which formed something that looked like a woman in a long white dress. Sometimes she seemed shy and faded in the wind currents, but she always returned to show off their beauty.

Back in the bus we were convinced that the limits are in the mind, the whole group showed teamwork and courage to fulfill this experience.

If you like the sound of nature and peace, I recommend you go to this beautiful volcano and lake, an experience you will never forget!!

Trekking Lago de Atitlán (English version, scroll down)

We were fortunate to participate in a beautiful trek that took place around apart of Lake Atitlan. An unforgettable experience.

The trek lasts about two hours with a few breaks. Around 11 kilometers are traveled in grounds of ups and downs. The path has incredible views of the lake, Volcán Atitlán, Tolimán, San Pedro and Paquisís.
Arriving at Panajachel, we took a boat and began our journey. We arrived at the dock of a town called Santa Cruz La Laguna where the trek begins. Starts on a path in front of properties and passes over a bridge with a dock style and moves as you pass over it, is a part of the journey that is a little scary but it is fun, it's part of the adventure! After the bridge you reach where the path begins.

Then you start walking up for a while and suddenly you are already above the cliffs, where the views are appreciated. These views come with a price, the heat, so do not forget your sunscreen and hat or cap. We also visited some villages where you can have a quick break and buy something in the stores that are on the main street. There are some exotic hotels that provide more contact with nature and there are also traditional hotels. Near the end of the walk there is a karate dojo that can be seen from below.

In all villages you can see foreign people in big amounts, it is interesting to see how foreign people travel so far to see something that for many Guatemalans is something simple. Our destination was San Marcos La Laguna, a nice town where the boat was waiting at the dock.

In San Marcos La Laguna you find the Tzankujiil hill where can walk on a trail and also there is a bathing area on the lake, also they have a deck from which you can jump into the lake from about 7 meters high! Very exciting! You can also choose to follow the trails and reach the peak of the hill, the way up is medium level difficulty and has signposts that show the way, the reward is a remarkable view to the villages and the lake.

The trip does not only overlooks the lake, you can also see the beautiful hotels or houses around this part of the lake. Very nice houses and some hotels that make you want to stay and continue the trek later. This trip leaves the open option of returning to enjoy a couple of days.

The journey is not difficult, there is always a part that can be hard, but that's the nice part of the walks ... always find something new that challenges you and it feels good do it!
